What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Ship Clothing for Women Dresses

The quintessential cruise style is easy to pull off; think vibrant colors, tropical prints and lightweight fabrics. What started as a yearly vacation with family quickly turned into a passion for travel, cruising and adventure. She even studied abroad on Semester at Sea, sailing the world on a ship while taking courses for college and visiting 4 continents. Women can look at packing floor-length dresses with long sleeves. Alaska is also the perfect destination for a jumpsuit with pants or pantsuit to keep warm. When it comes to Smart Casual during your Alaska cruise, you’ll also want to consider the weather for your sailing.

Packing For Your Vacation Plans

You will want to have a shirt/cover up if heading in somewhere to eat for lunch. Although you don’t see it in the photos, I did bring a light sweater with me as well as a shawl. I like wearing sleeveless dresses, however the air conditioning in the dining room can be cool, so having a light sweater is a must. I’m short and love to wear comfortable wedge sandals that I can walk in easily. I always pack at least one pair of stylish neutral wedge style sandals to wear during the day and evening (seen in photo below). Some ships require dressier outfits like long gowns and fancy cocktail dresses.

T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, hoodies and long-sleeved T-shirts are a no-no for men in the evenings. That means one pair of shorts, chinos or jeans for daytime (depending on your cruise's itinerary). Again, pay attention to colors if you're hoping to mix and match. T-shirts are fine for all daytime indoor dining (tank tops are fine for the pool, but may get a look on some ships during breakfast or lunch indoors). From breakfast through the afternoon, you don't need to stress about your outfits.

Final Caribbean Cruise Packing Tips

Consider packing half-zips, long sleeve shirts and crewnecks paired with jeans. In all honesty, most Caribbean cruises are very casual for the entirety of the sailing. It’s a fine line between Smart Casual compared to just Casual night, especially on a sun-filled Caribbean cruise. Linen pants are great to pack for warmer months because it's very breathable. For women, mid-length dresses are perfect for Smart Casual evenings onboard, along with summery skirts or capris. The whites and blues are perfect for Mediterranean cruises while cooler climates can consider adding a blazer or stylish jacket for Northern Europe.

Caribbean Cruise Dress Code

I’ve chosen a variety of dresses in the image below with differing necklines, material, sleeve length and style. Keep in mind, a more casual dress can be dressed-up with heels, accessories and some bolder makeup. Similar to other European outfit ideas, I would encourage you to stick to more neutral colors and save the bright colors and bold patterns for your Caribbean sailing.

FAQ – Cruise Outfits and Packing Tips

However, you’ll want to have binoculars handy whether you’re watching from the Lido deck or your balcony. While you’re unlikely to need mosquito or bug spray if you stay near the port or head to a beach, you’ll need it for some shore excursions. If you’re heading into the forest, like going zip-lining or river tubing, bring along insect repellent.

Formal Night / Dress Your Best

If you are planning any adventures in port such as horseback riding, an ATV tour, or ziplining, you will need some activewear. You may also want to bring athletic clothes if you plan to hit the ship’s gym. For shoes, I recommend a pair of cute sandals and a simple block heel that matches with all of your outfits.

Cruisers swear by the hanging organizer for toiletries and other essentials on a cruise. While not a true cruise must-have, a Go-Pro is a great way to get amazing video footage on your vacation, on active excursions and in the ocean (it goes underwater). If you’re looking for a new toy and want to create a vacation  video or Vlog, you’ll love the image quality of the new Go Pro 9. Cruisers often wonder where they can put valuables and identification when on excursions or hanging out on the beach. This useful item has become one of the most popular cruise accessories. Make sure to have some motion sickness remedies, as it’s always possible to be affected by some seasickness during your cruise.

What to include in your cruise wardrobe

Generally speaking, Caribbean cruises are all about relaxing, letting loose, and having fun. Packing for your Caribbean cruise will include bright colors, tropical patterns and plenty of swimsuits. You’ll be sailing in warm climates and spending your day in the sun or at the beach, so you can plan to wear most of your summer and spring clothes. When I visited Titou Gorge in Dominica during my cruise, I needed to bring swimwear and regular clothes. Having a wet bag was essential for keeping my soaked swimsuit separated from everything else. Here’s full cruise carry on packing list, and I will include it at the bottom of this post as well.

This isn’t to say that you can’t dress to the nines in black-tie or evening gowns; rather, it’s truthfully no longer the standard. This is especially true if you’re sailing on a shorter cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas. Plan to wear at least one outfit during the day, one outfit at night, and possibly an additional outfit for an excursion per day on your Caribbean cruise. Bring enough clothing for seven daytime and seven nighttime outfits for a week-long Caribbean cruise.

A pretty bathing suit cover up is a must-have cruise wear for a Caribbean cruise. You may want to bring a couple for both cruise ship and beach days. If you enjoy dressing up like me, keep reading for what to pack for a Caribbean cruise for formal night. Some people will be undressed in shorts and shirts, while others will be in black tie evening gowns. So, for my Princess cruise, I packed 2 fancier dresses and my husband and son each packed one suit, with 2 different dress shirts.

For cruise activewear, I like packing matching sets or jumpsuits so I look put together while still functional. Be sure to check with your specific excursion if there are requirements such as long pants or close toed shoes. Focus on lightweight tops -- tank tops and T-shirts are more than fine all day long, indoors or out. You'll likely want one top for each day of your cruise (roll them to save space in your luggage). One or two bathing suits should be the maximum, just don't expect to wear them into dining areas.

Either of the above bags is great for storing your glasses, wallet, and phone for port days. Note which shore excursions you'll be doing and keep in mind your fitness routine before packing. Men will also be required to cover legs and shoulders at most religious monuments, so be prepared ahead of time and reconsider shorts and tank tops. In general, the same rules apply to men and women when it comes to packing for a cruise.

While it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in your swimsuit while lounging beside the pool, you’ll need a cover-up to walk from your stateroom to the pool, and vice-versa. Keep in mind, depending on where your stateroom or suite is located, you may go through other common areas of the ship (in addition to the elevators) on your way to the pool. Make sure your swim cover-up is something you will feel comfortable in while walking around others. If your itinerary includes a Glow Party night, consider packing an all-white outfit.
